Gardening in the modern age means making things more complicated and arduous, with electrons, bits, and bytes. Behold: the garduino. My brother got me an arduino microcontroller board for Christmas, which to me was a solution looking for a problem. I finally found the problem: fresh herbs are expensive at the grocery store. But apparently not as expensive as adding a bunch of sensors and electronics to your garden. Build one yourself or just poke around in the code: 🤍 Thanks to my brother, Graham, for the Arduino board and editing the narration. Thanks to Chris from YouTube channel AvE (🤍 for the tips on soil moisture sensors and water hammer. Most of the parts in this build came from 🤍. Combining microcontrollers and gardening is a really popular idea. I think that’s because gardens have very simple inputs and outputs that are easy to wrap your head around. I guess people (myself included) see a notoriously simple and relaxed hobby and can’t help but feel compelled to overcomplicate it. But just about anyone can connect the dots between "Garden needs water" and "I am not a responsible human being who is capable of remembering to water a garden every day" and realize, "Hey, I can use technology to overcome my personal shortcomings," and more than that, "I can bend technology to my will and that will feel good to my ego and my sense of self-worth." After all, no one’s hobby is to buy an irrigation controller off the shelf of a hardware store. Thanks for watching, and let me know what you think. A few technical details below... If there's anything I didn't address, feel free to shoot me a question in the comments. Moisture sensors that measure the resistance or conductivity across the soil matrix between two contacts are essentially junk. First of all, resistance is not a very good indicator of moisture content, because it is highly dependent on a number of factors which might vary from garden to garden including soil ph, dissolved solids in the water, and temperature. Second, most of them are of poor quality with contacts that easily corrode. For the most part you'd be lucky to get one to last through an entire season. Capacitive sensors are generally more accurate because they are just measuring the change in dialetric properties of the soil which is less sensitive to other environmental factors. They also don't require any exposed conductive surfaces which means they can last a bit longer in the harsh environment of your backyard. My soil moisture sensor (and soil temperature sensor) came from 🤍. The arudino’s analog inputs read voltage, so to use a resistive sensor (like the photoresistor I used to measure sunlight), you have to set up a voltage divider. This is just a really simple circuit which divides the voltage drop between your sensor and a known resistor. You know the current is the same for both, so you can calculate the resistance of your sensor using ohm’s law. The only problem here is that a photoresistor’s relationship to illuminance is log-log, that is to say it spans several orders of magnitude. So if you use a big resistor (5k - 10k ohm) in your voltage divider, your sensor will be sensitive to low light levels, but you won’t be able to tell the difference between a sunny day and an overcast one. Since this thing’s going outside, I used a 100 ohm resistor, which should hopefully give me good differentiation between levels of brightness in the daylight. Music from incompotech.com

This video is to give some insights in creating a very large LED CUBE. I modeled this cube and construction jigs in fusion 360, led Driver PCB is made with KiCad. Code is programmed in PlatformIO using the Arduino Platform. The dome is made from acrylic, I ordered that by size and glued it together with chloroform. All black plastic was printed on my CR10S-pro and glued with chloroform. I have a custom PCB with a Teensy 4.0 mounted on it. Only 3 pins of the Teensy are used to drive 32 channels with 128 leds each. The refresh rate of the display and the animations is 178 frames per second. Everything is non blocking and refreshing the display is done with DMA taking zero processor time. There also is an esp8266 and a touchscreen connected to the PCB, that will need to be programmed at a later time. Code and Gerber files are available for free, link is in the video. I got a feeling that what you really wanna do is start controlling all types of cool electronic stuff. Maybe you got some cool ideas for some projects and you just wanna get rolling. The quickest way to do that is to learn and understand how to use Arduino Libraries. They are gonna help you get up and running super fast with all types of different electronic stuff, by leveraging the hard work and expertise of an amazing group of programmers from all over the world. In this video, you are gonna learn exactly what an Arduino Library is and how it's gonna catapult you in your prototyping efforts. You are gonna learn the quickest way to learn how to use an Arduino Library. It's what I've been doing for years, and it always pays off. And I'll show you two examples of a library in action. Let's go. So what exactly is in Arduino Library? It's not like a place with a bunch of books about Arduino, right? You're right. It's not that. When you hear the term Arduino Library, what it's referring to is code that someone or some group of people have written, and they've packaged it up to work on a specific thing. So an Arduino Library is code that's developed for a specific purpose, and is packaged in a way that allows you to access all of the functionality without necessarily having to understand all the dirty details. Because anytime you're writing code, and learning about new stuff, and figuring things out, there's a lot of complexity. And what and Arduino Library does is it abstracts away some of that complexity by giving us simpler ways to access the functionality. So let me give you an example. Let's say you sit in your car and you wanna start it, right? Maybe you have a key start or a button start, or maybe, I don't know, maybe there's like clapper start cars. I don't know, whatever. Anyway, all you gotta do is something really simple, right? But what actually takes place inside the car is rather complex. It's got a starter in there, or maybe, I guess if you have an electric car, maybe there isn't a starter, but you get the idea. All types of things are happening by you simply turning a key, pressing a button, whatever, right? You don't need to know the details of all that. All you have to do is turn the key. So an Arduino Library is sort of like that. There is a person or several people who have worked together to write code to control some type of hardware or do some type of calculation. For example, controlling a stepper motor, or a servo motor, or maybe lighting up some NeoPixel LEDs. So these people have put in the blood, sweat, and tears to make this code work, and what you're able to do is just use the functions or part of the code that they've written in order to invoke all of the stuff that is going on in their library. And what's amazing is you can get these Arduino Libraries for completely free. Almost all of them are open source. They're just being shared out there. Just about any piece of hardware out there that you want to control, there's probably gonna be a library that's already been written to help you control it, and I wanna try to drive the point home that this is absolutely amazing. You're basically being handed all these tools that you can start using. People are just like, "Hey, here, use this tool. Hey, use this tool." It's like, I don't know, to me, it's really exciting. Now, I'm not saying you're gonna just blindly use any library. It's a good idea to have an idea of kind of some of the inner workings, but when you're just getting started and you really have no idea how the coding works at all, it's fantastic to be able to just use these libraries and, bam! After examining how stepper motors work and what the difference is between a “Bipolar” and “Unipolar” stepper is I will show you how three methods of controlling a stepper motor with an Arduino: 1 - A common 28YBJ-48 Unipolar Stepper with a ULN2003 driver board. These inexpensive stepper and driver combinations are very common and are available on eBay, Amazon, and probably in your local electronics store. I’ll show you two different ways to use these with two different Arduino libraries. 2 - A NEMA 17 Bipolar stepper motor with an L298N dual H-Bridge driver board. We’ve used the L298N driver board in another video to control a pair of brushed DC motors but it also makes a good driver for a bipolar stepper motor. 3 - The same NEMA 17 Bipolar stepper motor controlled by an A4988 stepper driver. This common driver board is used in many 3D printers and CNC machines and simplifies the control of one or several stepper motors with an Arduino. I’ll also discuss concepts like microstepping and I will show you how to understand some of the many parameters that are included on stepper motor specification sheets. OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) displays have a lot of advantages over LCD and traditional LED displays. Today we will learn how to use OLED displays with our Arduino projects. We’ll also build an OLED Temperature and Humidity Meter. They come in all sizes, from huge wall-sized OLED televisions to thumbnail-sized status displays. Today we will work with three small OLED displays: - A 128x32 monochrome display that uses I2C - A 128x64 dual-color display that also uses I2C - A Waveshare 1.5 inch 128x128 monochrome display that can use either I2C or SPI I’ll explain how an OLED differs from a regular LED and how it is ‘organic”. It doesn’t have anything to do with growing OLEDs without pesticides! Next, we’ll look at some I2C OLEDs and experiment with them, using some excellent libraries from Adafruit. After that, we will look at a very nice OLED display from Waveshare. It’s the largest display we’ll examine today and it can be used with either I2C or SPI. I will demo it in SPI mode using the demo code provided by Waveshare. The example sketches provided with the libraries do a nice job of showing off the display's capabilities but they can be a little overwhelming to reverse-engineer for your own scripts. So to help I‘ve put together a very simple project to display simple text on the display, you can use it as the basis for your own Arduino OLED display projects. The project is a temperature and humidity meter that uses the 128 x 64 dual-color OLED as a display. It uses an I2C temperature and humidity sensor so the wiring is super-easy. I'll go over the code for that in detail so you can see how it writes values to the OLED display.
