Some of you guys asked this question and I thought its appropriate to make a video. So Personally id like to think of a Load balancer as one of the applications of a reverse proxy. It is a special case of a reverse proxy. Lets us define what a reverse proxy is first. To define load balancer we need to first define what a reverse proxy is. And to define reverse proxy, we need to know what a proxy is! So lets start with a proxy A proxy is a piece of software that makes request to a server in place of the client. Servers don’t know who are the client. Reverse proxy is the reverse! The client doesn’t know which server it is connected to. I recommend checking out the video of proxy vs reverse proxy to learn more. A Load balancer is a special case of a reverse proxy. Reverse proxy doesn’t have to be a load balancer. Load balancers must have two or more servers on the backend to balance the load, reverse proxy doesn’t have to. Reverse proxy can be optimized to perform the following: 1. Caching web acceleration 2. Load Balancing is a key concept to system design. One simple way would be hashing all requests and then sending them to the assigned server. The standard way to hash objects is to map them to a search space, and then transfer the load to the mapped computer. A system using this policy is likely to suffer when new nodes are added or removed from it. Some terms you would here in system design interviews are Fault Tolerance, in which case a machine crashes. And Scalability, in which case machines need to be added to process more requests. Another term used often is request allocation. This means assigning a request to a server. Load balancing is often tied with service discovery and global locks. The type of load we want to balance is that of sticky sessions. Looking to ace your next interview? NGINX is primarily used as a web server, a reverse proxy, and/or a load balancer. In this short video, we'll go over how you can take an existing NGINX reverse proxy setup and convert it to load balance traffic to multiple backend servers. Sites that become extremely popular have to deal with consistent increases in monthly traffic, which can slow down the experience for everyone involved. A well designed load balancer will efficiently distribute incoming network traffic across a group of backend servers. A load balancer acts as the “traffic cop” sitting in front of your servers and routing client requests across all servers capable of fulfilling those requests in a manner that maximizes speed and capacity utilization and ensures that no one server is overworked, which could degrade performance. If a single server goes down, the load balancer redirects traffic to the remaining online servers. When a new server is added to the server group, the load balancer automatically starts to send requests to it. Load balancing is everywhere, most often starts at the DNS level and can choose any server selection strategy based on the system design. The AWS Network Load Balancer (NLB) provides an option to add static public IP addresses in each Availability Zone in which the NLB has nodes. This allows us to know the public IP addresses that will be returned in DNS resolutions of the NLBs endpoint DNS name. One of the reasons this can be very useful is if you're connecting from a company office or data center that restricts outbound communications for certain protocols. In that use case, you can whitelist the NLBs static public IP addresses to ensure that the communication is not restricted.
