Almost exactly ten years ago today, thousands of you set your alarms, and woke on leap-day morning to discover that we’d started selling Raspberry Pi computers. By the time our all-volunteer team gathered in the pub that evening for celebratory drinks, our licensees Farnell and RS Components had taken over 100,000 orders (despite struggling to keep their websites online under the load); we had (briefly) out-trended Lady Gaga; and Raspberry Pi was on the road to becoming a little larger than we’d planned. This is a great tool for your next media presentation or video art project as the Raspberry Pi loads immediately after being plugged in and runs continuously. Building VGA output from a Raspberry Pi Pico. The Raspberry Pi Pico is amazing. Sections of the video so you can skip ahead 00:00 Intro 01:06 Pico Setup 03:35 VGA Resistor DAC 08:43 Program and Demo In this video I go through building the VGA output circuit using only resistors. It has a 5 bit DAC on each of the red, green and blue lines which means it should have 32,768 individual colours. In the video I mislabel 2 resistors. The resistor ladder should be 499 ohm, 1K ohm, 2K ohm, 4.02K ohm and 8.06K ohm in that order. It's supposed to double each time, the linked schematic in the description is accurate here 🤍 The full schematic just for the VGA output including RGB, HSYNC and VSYNC is here 🤍 The demo code comes from the GitHub repo for RaspberryPi.org see the links below. Please note this video is not sponsored in any way. There is a follow up video where I fix some of the colour issues I mention in this video. See the end card for the link. tl;dw - I couldn't get the video cards to work. But I got very close! And I learned a lot in the process. I'm putting everything here: 🤍 After I learned the Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4 IO Board comes with a PCIe slot, I know the first thing I thought about testing was a graphics card. The Mali GPU inside the Pi 4 is decent on its own, but what if you could use external video cards, for mining, for rendering, or for CUDA or other GPU-accelerated computing purposes? So that's what I sought to try out in this video, going boldly where... a couple others have gone before, but unsuccessfully!
